Introduction to African Palms USA

African Palms, USA distributes Palms Crosses made in Masasi, Tanzania, to Christian Churches of all denominations throughout the United States. These crosses are used in the liturgy for Palm Sunday, Ash Wednesday, and other special services during the Church year. As they are made in Africa, the net profit from the sale of these crosses is returned to Africa in the form of self-help grants for projects that are targeted toward basic human needs. Grants are awarded up to $5,000 to Anglican and other Christian Leaders for use in projects that benefit the entire community.

Criteria For Applying For An African Palms Grant

Requests must be a benefit for the entire community. Projects that African Palms will support include:

  •  The support of health clinic, Hospice/Hostel Programs
  •  Training for Public Health, HIV/AIDS prevention
  •  Famine/Refugee Relief
  •  Agriculture and Animal/Poultry Programs
  •  Support of Education, (vocational, community)
  •  Improvement of Community Water Supply

African Palms will not fund or consider the following

  • Education Request for Individuals
  • Scholarships
  • Salaries
  • Pension Funds
  • Automobiles
  • Request not submitted on the African Palms USA application
Application Guidelines - Important!!
  • Bishop or Equivalent Ecclesiastic Authority Signature along with the Statement of Endorsement of the project. (This should be on the letterhead).

  • Progress Report on Previously Awarded Grants, if any
  • Describe the Project/projects for which you need financial assistance
  • Full Project Budget
  • Specific Budget - (Funds Requested)
  • Development Officer
  • A copy of the organization's latest annual report, if available

Deadline Dates

  • April 15th of each year for consideration at the May meeting
  • September 15th of each year for consideration at the November meeting
  Only completed applications will be reviewed by members of the Grants Committee. Once the Grants Committee has reviewed the application, recommendations for funding is then made to the Board of Trustees, which has the final decision.

The final decision about each application is communicated to the bishop(s) and various contact persons associated with the grant as soon as possible following each meeting of the Board. Monies awarded will be forwarded to the banking instructions found in the application.

The resources of African Palms USA are not sufficient, to respond to all requests. It is not always possible to award the full amount requested. Receipt of a completed application does not guarantee an award.
